Stephen Blyth
Former travel writer Stephen Blyth has turned his love of maps and road-trips into art forged from recycled license plates. Maps evoke memories of place and the adventure of discovery. The texture, colors, phrasing and iconic imagery of US license plates provide a vibrant medium for re-imagining familiar geography.
Now a professor of the practice of statistics at Harvard University and previously President and CEO of the Harvard Management Company, Stephen first created artwork from license plates in 2000 while living in New York City. Starting with faithful scale representations of the United States, his work has expanded to span continents, countries, cities and symbols, often incorporating intricate permutations and playful choices of state plates.
Stephen has exhibited in Boston, Cape Cod and Brookline. His work has been featured in the Boston Globe, and can be found in institutional, corporate and private collections.
